You probably need to give that username access to that database.

The chosen user for managing the phpBB can login to MySQL directly on the Pi, and via Putty on Windows, and is a member of the mysql group on the pi, and has been given full privilege on the appropriate database. Maybe some extra special rights are required to carry out this installation.

I installed phpBB quite a few years ago, via Windows and on a remotely hosted server. As I remember it worked first time. Yet I have been trying to get this version to work for neary two weeeks.

I am reluctant to abandon this, as there are few alternatives.
